Mindfulness Based Psychotherapy

Developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn, who pioneered the introduction of mindfulness into Western medicine in the late 1970s, mindfulness is “the awareness that emerges through paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally, to things as they are". In therapy, it is the focus on learning to become aware of all incoming thoughts and feelings and accepting them, but not attaching or reacting to them. This is aimed at advancing psychological insight, emotional healing, and ability to tolerate mental and physical pain, alongside relieving symptoms of stress. Mindfulness-based interventions have been shown as efficient in addressing a range of symptoms and concerns. Although grounded in ancient Buddhist teachings, it is not limited to any particular religion or philosophy. It is a quality that all of us possess and can learn to cultivate and increase through practice.
